Start with the real exposure

The wording must match the business behind it

A visitor, neighbour, customer or member of the public can suffer injury or property damage connected with business operations. Public liability insurance can respond to covered legal liability and defence costs, subject to wording and limits.

The right structure depends on premises, footfall, processes, hazardous substances, contracts and the geographical scope of operations.

A policy works as a programme: values, wording, extensions and claims preparation must support one another.

Buyer questions

Clear answers before you decide

These are starting points. The final answer always depends on the selected insurer’s wording and your disclosed circumstances.

Is public liability mandatory?

Requirements depend on the activity and applicable law, including special rules for certain hazardous industries. Contractual requirements may also apply.

Does it cover employee injury?

Usually not as a public-liability claim. Employee injury is generally considered under workmen compensation or other employee covers.

Does public liability cover products after sale?

Product-related injury or damage generally requires product liability cover; the boundary should be reviewed carefully.
